How Ganterud Made Stair Installation Effortless at Turku Railway Yard

The Turku Railway Yard is getting a massive makeover, and NRC Group Finland Oy (NRC) is leading the charge. With a €37.6 million contract in hand, they’re upgrading tracks, platforms, and key infrastructure to modernize the area.

But let’s talk about the real game-changer in this project: Ganterud

Freezing Temps, Tight Deadlines – No Problem

NRC was tasked with installing elevator shafts and staircases on the Logomon bridge. Normally, lifting and aligning massive steel structures in freezing weather would be a slow, painstaking job.

Enter Ganterud.

Over two days, two mobile cranes from lifted the elements into place. But what made the process smooth and efficient? Ganterud. These innovative tools on the crane hooks made it easier than ever to align the steel structures.

No more guesswork. No more wasted time. Just precise, controlled lifting.

A Railway Revamp That’s Changing the Game

The Kupittaa–Turku railway project (totaling €162 million) is a big deal. New station platforms, a double track, and a rebuilt railway bridge over the Aura River are all in the works.

For NRC, this meant tackling everything from track construction to staircases, piling, noise walls, and more. The Site Manager, a railway veteran, summed it up:

“This isn’t just about laying tracks. It’s about handling everything that comes with modernizing a railway hub.”

And when it came to lifting those massive elevator shafts and staircases, the team needed a solution that was fast, accurate, and reliable.

Ganterud: The Secret to Effortless Installation

On day two of installation, by 9:00 AM, the city-side elevator shaft was already securely in place. The day before, another shaft and the staircase at the Logomo end had already been lifted.

How did they do it so quickly?

Precision Control: The Ganterud auto-leveller allowed operators to adjust the staircase in real-time, avoiding the usual struggle with unstable loads.
Time-Saving: Instead of pulling with pulleys (a slow, clumsy process), the team used remote-controlled features of the Ganterud to place elements exactly where they needed to go—instantly.
Perfect Balance: Some elements, like the 28-ton staircase, have an uneven weight distribution. Heavy screen protectors on one side made traditional lifting nearly impossible. With Ganterud’s levelling feature, the load was perfectly balanced before placement.

“We would have spent way more time without Ganterud,”

“It’s easy to use and made our job so much simpler. We’ll definitely use it again.”

Meet the Ganterud L20-3 Pro: The Heavy-Lifting Hero

The L20-3 Pro, the largest model from Swedish manufacturer Ganterud, is built for exactly these kinds of jobs:

🔹 Lifts up to 20 tonnes
🔹 90-degree load rotation in mid-air
🔹 3-meter levelling range in any direction
🔹 Remote-controlled for pinpoint accuracy
🔹 IP67-protected controller, works in -20°C to +40°C
🔹 Low maintenance – just charge the battery once a week

At 395 kg, the L20-3 Pro packs serious power into a compact, robust design. And for NRC’s Turku project, it saved time, reduced risk, and made the impossible—possible.

With more station upgrades, staircases, and platform shelters on the way, one thing is clear:

Ganterud is changing the way heavy lifting is done.

And for teams working in tough conditions with tight deadlines, it’s not just a tool—it’s a lifesaver
