Shackles are one of the most common and important pieces of equipment in rigging practices. They can be used in various applications including but not limited to:

  • On lifting chain configurations
  • With web slings
  • With round slings
  • For attaching chain blocks to a beam clamps
  • Fitted to lifting points on machinery
  • As an anchor points

Shackles come in four main configurations  bow type, safety bow type, dee and piling. These types come in various finishes, galvanised, self colour, zinc plated, stainless steel grade 304 and stainless steel grade 316.


When using shackles deemed suitable for overhead lifting, safety is of paramount importance. Shackles must meet a certain criteria in order to be deemed suitable for purpose. This criteria is laid out in the European Standard  EN 13889:2003+A1:2008


6 monthly thorough inspection of lifting shackles by a deemed competent body is mandatory. Subsequent to this it is important that the user inspects the shackle prior to use to ensure that it is not damaged and suitable for the required task.
